Protect Your Jewelry

The more you know about your diamond and gemstone jewelry, the more you’ll understand the importance of proper treatment and care of it. Taking care of your gems and jewelry will add to your appreciation of their lasting beauty and value. Since we are among the most knowledgeable in the jewelry industry, it’s safe to say that we understand how to protect your jewelry. Here are some recommendations on how to keep your jewelry in pristine conditions for years.

Wear Factors
When wearing fine jewelry and gemstones, be aware that activity that subjects fine jewelry and gemstones to sharp blows - such as gardening, working with hand tools, or playing sports - may cause damage. Diamonds are also susceptible to damage from an impact, which might cause them to chip or crack. Jewelry, especially rings, should be removed before doing household chores. Apply hair spray, lotions, or perfumes before you put on your jewelry. Chemicals present in any of these may cause damage, especially to cultured pearls. Wipe your pearls with a soft chamois or flannel cloth after each wearing to remove skin oils and salts. A few colored gemstones, such as kunzite, may fade when worn in sunlight or in a tanning booth. Few watches are waterproof, though many are water resistant. If moisture or dust has penetrated the case of your watch, have it checked by an authorized technician. Attempts by an untrained repair person may seriously damage the watch and invalidate factory warranties.

Cleaning Do’s and Don'ts
In most cases, you can insure a lifetime of pleasurable wear through routine home care and cleaning of your fine jewelry supplemented by regular care and cleaning from us.

We provide free cleaning as a service to our clients along with complimentary check- ups to be certain the gemstones are secure and safe in their settings.

Feel free to ask us about at-home cleaning instructions when purchasing fine jewelry and gemstones. Regular cleaning of your fine jewelry and gemstones is recommended. At home, use a special commercial jewelry cleaner that is available for purchase from us. You can also purchase polishing cloths that can be used on karat gold, sterling silver, or other jewelry metals. Using paper towels can scratch your fine jewelry and gemstones.

Chemicals in certain products can damage certain gems, such as pearls, emeralds, lapis, and coral, even if they are considered to be mild. Soft brushes used in applying cleaners can also damage some gems. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, heat, hot water, and steamers on certain gems. Come in and see us, and we’ll recommend a cleaner for each type of your jewelry. Be sure to dry your pearls completely on a flat surface before storing them. Make sure also keep your pearl earrings, pendants and rings away from water as much as possible. Since most pearls are set using epoxy, bathing and showering with your pearl jewelry on will increase the risk of your pearls falling off the setting.

Storage
Protect your jewelry when it is not being worn, or when traveling, by separating items from one another using individual compartments in your jewelry box. When improperly stored, gemstone and metal jewelry items can damage each other. For example, diamonds will scratch and even chip other gemstones. Additionally, most gemstones will scratch gold, silver, and platinum. Pearls deserve special attention. Separate pearl items in individual silk or cotton pouches and be sure your pearls are clean and dry before storing.
